Jason Blum Says Day-And-Date Release For Halloween Kills Was His Idea

Image
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the movie industry in more ways than we know, but one change has become abundantly clear: Hybrid releases are all the rage. In the early months of the pandemic, Warner Bros. made big waves when it announced the plan to release its entire 2021 movie slate on HBO Max and in theaters simultaneously . Nearly a year later, with theaters across the country finally reopened, hybrid releases aren't really fading away. Paramount has gotten comfortable debuting family films both in theaters and on Paramount+. This actually makes a lot of sense for "Clifford: The Big Red Dog" and other titles targeting a younger audience, since kids aren't able to get the vaccine, making parents hesitant to risk theater trips. But horror fans were surprised when Universal and Blumhouse announced that "Halloween Kills" will premiere simultaneously on Peacock and in theaters on October 11, 2021. Producer and Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum has now offered a...

Doctor Strange 2 Director Sam Raimi Explains His Process: 'A Different Take, Something Unexpected'

Image
The path that filmmaker Sam Raimi took to end up in charge of another Marvel superhero was a long and winding one -- full of unexpected developments and an odd (some might say strange ) confluence of unlikely events. Maybe it was destiny? In that sense, it's a journey that's perfectly fitting for the director of "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness."  I could almost picture Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange hovering off the ground, looking through potential futures, and landing on the exact one-in-a-million outcome where Raimi ended up back in the realm of superheroes after his disastrous experience on "Spider-Man 3." Stepping in for previous director Scott Derrickson on the "Doctor Strange" sequel could've been an unenviable position to be in, but by all accounts Raimi made the transition as smooth as possible. How? By doing it entirely his own way. Raimi's Return Marvel's grand plans for Doctor Strange's post...

Black As Night Director Maritte Lee Go Brings A Fresh Perspective To An Ancient Horror [Interview]

Image
"Welcome to the Blumhouse" is back with four new films , each focused on telling a scary story from a marginalized community. The coming-of-age vampire horror "Black as Night" stars Asjha Cooper as Shawna, a 15-year-old in New Orleans whose high school concerns are thrown by the wayside when her drug-addicted mom gets bitten by a vampire. "Black as Night" is a refreshing and fun horror story that's whip-smart and filled to the brim with violent bloodsuckers.  I got a chance to sit down via Zoom with director Maritte Lee Go, who was super-excited to talk about shooting "Black as Night," working with Blumhouse, and surviving a scary lightning strike. This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.  Slaying Vampires In The Big Easy First off, is horror your favorite genre? I saw you've done some horror work before, but I was wondering what some of your inspirations were and if you were excited to do something with Blumhouse. Oh my...

Love Life Season 2 Trailer: William Jackson Harper Takes The Lead

Image
William Jackson Harper is on the hunt for love, as the new star of HBO's "Love Life." Like Darby (Anna Kendrick) before him, Harper's Marcus Watkins is desperately trying to break the cycle: he's done enough dating and breaking up to be thoroughly exhausted, but quitting isn't an option. Fans of the first season know that he has a very messy journey ahead and though he may not end up with the happy ending he imagines, he'll be happy all the same. Check out the trailer for "Love Life" season 2 below! Love Life Season 2 Trailer According to his friends, Marcus is a "Classic Obama." This might just be a commentary on his corny jokes but hopefully it means his perfect, strong-willed match is out there somewhere just waiting to be wooed. So far, Marcus hasn't had a ton of luck in that department. Marcus starts the trailer with divorce all over him, moving into a tragically empty apartment that obviously reeks of loneliness. Newly d...
